Sports Premium Funding

Sport for fun, Sport for learning, Sport for life”

Sports Premium update 2018

  • The Government have announced a doubling of sports premium for 2017.18 which equates to £16,000 per school and an additional £10 per head. It has been confirmed that this additional allocation will also be provided in 2018.19. The doubling is being partially funded through the sugar tax.

  • The key priority is to demonstrate impact of this funding on raising children’s activity and the sustainability and strategic level of spend of the sports premium funding. Garras School evidences this through the time2move strategy, YST Quality Mark and School Games Kitemark. The Garras time2move strategy is published each April and confirms how and why the money has been spent. Garras historically holds Silver Quality Mark and Silver schools games kite marks. This year the school is reapplying for Healthy Schools accreditation.

  • Nationally and internationally it has been accepted that there is a direct correlation between physically active children and academic attainment. Independent research has shown that on average active children are 33% times more likely to achieve well academically then their inactive peers.

  • It is a requirement for schools to support all children with achieving 30 active minutes per day in addition to the 2 hours of PE per week. It is a government priority that children have 60 active minutes per day with 30 minutes being completed at home. Garras School supports this key priority through the development of forest and beach school, active break times and lessons, the new swim offer and range of after school clubs and competitions through the Mullion sports cluster.

  • Our priority is to sustain physical activity for the future by continuing to develop our active playground, forge closer links with a wider range of community based sporting organisations and enhance staff training and skills to ensure these developments have a greater legacy.

  • More information and updates about sports premium funding and our sports and PE offers can be found on our school's website.
